KML and its personnel have been actively involved in tidal renewable energy since its conception, providing marine support during installation of the world’s first offshore tidal turbine near Lynmouth, North Devon in 2003, and for the world’s first commercial scale turbine in 2008.
In 2009, KML were commissioned as Principal Marine Contractor and CDM Principal Contractor for installation of a 500kw fully submerged tidal turbine at the European Marine Energy Tidal Test Centre (EMEC), Orkney. Since then, we have been involved in many aspects of marine wave and tidal energy including installation, maintenance, mooring and consultation.
KML’s Heavy lift crane barge has been stationed in Orkney since arriving in 2009 and supplies lifting services for marine renewable device developers. Our multi-purpose mini construction vessel also stationed in the area offers deployment/retrieval/maintenance support, survey support and is fully equipped with a Cougar ROV.
KML provides combined, sole contractor solutions for a wide range of projects offering “through life” services. With its own specialist vessels, highly skilled crew, and excellent project managers, we have built a history of successful operations working for many leading technology developers within the wave & tide renewables sector. In addition to the physical work undertaken, we also carry out TSR’s, feasibility studies, foundation design, mooring design and consultancy (including procedural consultancy), support and supply mooring componentry to wave and tidal energy devices.
